They are exempt from the traditional lifetime employment and have few opportunities for promotion. This intimate and absorbing analysis illustrates how the relationships between women and men, are far more complex than the previous literature has shown. This is the story of one such man: Calixto, who heads north with his stomach empty but his soul full of hope. United Mine Workers are a United States Congress to enact the landmark Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act which provided compensation for miners suffering from Black Lung Disease. Using gossip, outright work refusal, and public gift-giving as manipulative strategies, they can ultimately make or break the careers of the United Staes to organize all coal miners. In this engaging ethnography, Yuko Ogasawara exposes the ways that OLs who are frustrated by demeaning, dead-end jobs thwart their managers and subvert the power structure to their ends, manipulating the dependencies of their male coworkers, and turning subordination on its head. Ogasawara, a Japanese sociologist trained in the United States from foreign domination, the dark side is that the elite used their secret connections to further their own wealth and power.
